Speaking at the All Things Digital Conference yesterday, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company was going to “double down” on product secrecy in the coming years. The biggest stories are always bound to corporate product cycles and, looking backward, the history of game news is a history of the products that were available to buy in a given period.
Perversely, so much investigative effort in the newsmaking business focuses around getting confirmation that a product exists before a company’s ready to publicly confirm that it exists. It’s sometimes dizzying to recall just how many news stories about videogames tend to basically be commercials. The image shows a lone space person–armored in metal and carrying a gun-like engineering tool–floating toward a planet whose surface appears icy blue and white. After several months of anonymous rumors about the game featuring co-op play and being set on an ice planet, EA released a screenshot and started a countdown timer on the game’s official website.
